The total cost of the project is 161 million Euros including 12.7 million Euros for the rolling stock. An opening gala took place in the evening of 21 November 2019 with the official ceremony and start of revenue service on 22 November 2019. The infrastructure works were launched in September 2019 and were finished only two years afterwards, in Summer 2019. The declaration to build the tram line was given in November 2016 with the „Déclaration d’utilité publique“ (Declaration of public necessity) published in January 2017. The public consultation for the line took place in February and March 2015. SYTRAL is the local transport authority and has a strategy to reduce car utilization in Lyon and is investing 1.2 billion euros in its 2015-2020 plan which includes three major infrastructure projects, one being the construction of the tram line T6. With more than 140 metro, bus, tram, funicular and trolleybus lines, the Lyon transport network, which has 1.8 million trips each day, is the largest in France (after Ile de France, the Paris region). Until now it had a length nearly 66 km of lines and handles more than 365,000 trips every day.
